The Summer Experiment – Auntie Annies – 27th Aug – Last Ever Gig
What happens when a band is faced with its own end before it even gets off its feet? Would this knowledge change their plan of action? Could it change the band’s dynamic? Could it even change the music? The Experiment is exactly this: a ‘band’ in its dying days from before you had even heard of them….it is what it is…no strings attached…just creativity. Doing what you can while you can. This is what we decided to make of Summer 2008 and we hope to remind everyone of the amazing things that happen when artists just allow themselves to create.
The Summer Experiment taking place in Auntie Annies on the 27th of August marks the end of the three month project undertaken by the Summer Experiment Quartet. Through this period the ‘band’ has worked towards a handful of gigs to be rounded up with The Summer Experiment itself this week in Auntie Annies.
The Summer Experiment is not just another band playing music at you from the stage. It is not just another gig with some bands you might have heard of before. It is a chance for you to take part and become part of the history of The Summer Experiment.
Poets Ciaran Breen, Lisa Walker and Jillian McLean have worked alongside The Quartet through this project. Material written for the event will be performed on the night through a variety of various media including live and digital performance.
Post production of the event will include a collaborative project between Phil O’Kane and The Quartet in the construction of an online exhibition of the event. Both performers and audience alike will be photographed and documented in capturing the actions, interactions and reactions of The Summer Experiment.

The Summer Experiment Quartet

www.myspace.com/thesummerexperimentquartet
The Summer Experiment is a musical quartet formed in June 2008 to experiment with music over a short period of time.
The Summer Experiment will evolve continually and organically across the defined three month period. During this period continual updates of audio and visual stimuli will be imposed on the observer. These will represent the current state of The Summer Experiment.
The Summer Experiment use both algorithms and chaos in the production of sonic form to create states of temporary and fixed media. There is no aim, method, result or conclusion. The arrangement of fixed sonic material may be based around theories of metric structure, perception of events, evolution and mistakes. There are no white coats or microscopes however there will be unfair tests conducted in uncontrolled environments with no safety goggles. There may be lab rats.
The Summer Experiment will be performing live experiments. These will be administered without anaesthetics and there will be no refund for unexpected results.
The Summer Experiment will cease to exist mid-September 2008. There will be no reunion tour, no greatest hits CD, no dance remixes, and no further experimentation.

RL/VL

RL/VL is the brainchild of 18 year old electronic composer Jack Hamill. An Acronym for Real Life/Virtual Life, his music seeks to explore the juxtaposition between humans and the modern world that co-exists around them.
Hailing from the tree-lined suburbs of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Jack found the epicentre of his inspiration in a sun soaked autumn spent in the USA and he began fiddling with compositions in the last days of 2006.
Today, he continues to put sound to tape, fuelled by memories, films, locations and nature as firm, and very audible, inspirations. He likes to use a variety of equipment, including a vast array of analogue synths, tape machines, old cassettes, his computer and toys.
The beauty of RL/VL is that no sound is too small.

Skypilot

Born in early 2002, SKYPILOT formed out of a love of all styles of rock music, every member bringing a different slant or idea on the way that their music should sound. The trio’s jam based approach to song writing means all avenues are explored, no idea is overlooked and most importantly that SKYPILOT forge their own path through the world of modern rock music. Early gigs and their debut SEVERELAND EP saw the band labelled with a “Stoner rock” tag perhaps due to underlying groove in every track, the type that makes you nod your head in time whether you want to or not. Great reviews in magazines like Rock Sound and Metal Hammer supported SKYPILOT’s reputation as a mighty live band and raised yet more interest in the trio.
